Preparing your child(ren) for Family Portraits

We all want our Family Portraits to be a success. But working with children can be sticky and messy. Pardon my pun!
So I am going to give you 3 easy steps to prepare your child(ren), for them to be at their best!!

Step #1:
Eat and Rest
Make sure they have eaten a filling snack and had a nap or rest. The snack should be something that isn't too heavy but will hold them over until dinner. For example: peanut butter and jelly sandwich, celery sticks with peanut butter or cream cheese (aka ants on a log) or crackers and cheese. Those are just a few examples of healthy but filling snacks to give to them. With the younger children, you should schedule the photo session about 1 hour after they usually wake up from a nap/rest. That allows the child enough time to be awake and ready to go! Now some children do better with taking a nap and then following that up with the snack. Do what works best for your little one!

Step #2:
Stay in Style
I'm not talking about the latest trends. I'm talking about their personal style. You want them to feel comfortable. It's all about capturing the essence of your child. My goal is that friends and family can look at the picture and say "That's so him!". There is an easy way to get them to wear the clothes you want and them still be happy. Pick out 3 outfits that you like. Then have them choose from those outfits. It gives you control but still leaves them feeling in control.

Step #3:
Build Excitement
If you are excited, they will be excited! As parents, we often are the ones that set the "tone" of the house. Our example of attitude will influence the attitude of everyone else. If your child(ren) see and hear that you are excited about picking out clothes and getting ready, they will probably follow suit. For example: " I am excited about having our pictures taken today. Are you? I know you are going to do great and have a fun time!". If they have questions or concerns, answer them truthfully but encourage them. It's natural for some children to be nervous or anxious about having their photos taken. That is why with your help, they can have a great session!!
Thanks for reading! I hope this has helped you prepare for your child's next photo session.
